Water Sources for water treament plant & operation undersatanding

Water treatment is necessary for removing the impurities that are contained in water as found in nature. The impurities and salts that are present in the water will form scaling and fouling on the respective equipment and will damage the performance of that equipment. If scaling and fouling will happen to the boiler heat transfer will not occur.

Water is used in Boiler, turbine, feed water, condenser & cooling Systems Purpose. Water contains dissolved salts, which upon evaporation of water form scales on the heat transfer surfaces. These salts will affect heat transfer resulting in overheating that will rupture respective equipment. Impurities carried over in the steam, causing deposits on turbine blades leading to reduced turbine efficiency, high vibrations, and blade failure.

Water treatment system

  • Water intake system
  •  Chemical reaction & clarifier system
  •  Pressure sand filters system
  •  Activated carbon filter system
  •  Reverse Osmosis system
  •  Degasifier & Mixed bed exchanger system
  •  Rematerialized filter system
  •  Neutralizing System

Sources of water

There are two sources of water:

  1. Surface water (Lakes, ponds, stream, river)
  2. Ground water (Open well and tube Well)

Canal Water

Primary source water is canal water, it is preferred because it has less conductivity which is good for main cooling water system. This raw water is transferred to the Pre-treatment plant through two pumps one working one standby.

Major Components of Canal Water System are :

  • Water storage Pond
  •  Intake water supply pumps

Water from canal is collected in water storage pond from this storage pond water is transferred to clarification system by canal intake pumps.

Operation and Interlocking Start-up

Open all vent valves to vent air from the pipe header

Pumps to be started manually & individually from local push button station

When the discharge pressure drops below the set point due to the abnormal situation stand by pumps shall be started automatically from DCS.

Pumps are interlocked with level of storage pond :

  • At high level in the intake water storage pond canal tube well pumps shall trip
  •  At low level in the intake water storage pond running intake water supply pump will trip

Well Water

In case of poor quality of water available from the canal bank or Canal intake pump system is under maintenance, the system will be fed from the tube wells pumps.

Start-up Operation

• Startup command from CCR Normal Operation

if discharge pressure in header falls below set point, then standby pumps will start automatically.

Tripping Condition

• If level of clarified holding tank in which this pump discharges water high then pump will be tripped.
