Gas Turbine is a machine that converts the chemical energy of fuel into mechanical energy which may be used to drive a generator that will produce electric energy with a transformer attached to the Generator to transmit the electricity to the Grid.
Uses of Gas Turbine
It is mainly used in aircraft, aviation, ships, and mostly in power plants to generate electricity. It uses different fuels which are characterized as liquid and gaseous fuels.
Gaseous fuels : Common types of gaseous fuels that are used in gas turbines are natural gas, hydrogen, refinery gas, and synthesis gas.
Liquid Fuels: The most common liquid fuel is HSD Diseal
It is based on the Brayton cycle which can be described as :
- Compressor ( to compress the air)
- Combustion Chamber ( where fuel and air are mixed to create combustion)
- Turbine
- Exhaust
In this article, we will specifically talk about the basic components and functions of GE Model MS9001E or Frame 9E Gas Turbine. the shaft of this gas turbine rotates at 3000 rpm counterclockwise as viewed looking downstream. The main component can be described as :
Components and Functions of Gas Turbine
1. Compressor
The compressor is a 17-stage axial flow compressor with 64 variable inlet guide vanes (IGV). Air is entered through these IGVs which are opened from 34 to 84 degrees. The function of these IGVs is to control the amount of airflow that enters the compressor. If IGVs are opened at an angle of 34 degrees it means a lower amount of air is entering the compressor and vice versa. the air is compressed to a pressure ratio of 12 to 1. In 17 stage axial flow compressor, each stage consists of :
- Set of Rotating blades (the rotating blades will increase the velocity of air )
- Set of Stationary blades (the stator stationary blades convert the gained kinetic energy into a pressure rise and guide air to enter the following stage at the proper angle )
Air that will be extracted from different stages of the compressor will bused for the following purposes
- Cooling of turbine outer surface
- Sealing of Turbine Bearings
- Pulsation
2. Combustion Chamber
The combustion system is used to burn fuel with compressed air and create hot gases at high temperatures: It consists of:
- 14 Combustion Chambers
- 14 Dual Fuel Nozzles
- Crossfire Tubes
- 4 Flame detectors (4,5,10,11)
- 2 Electrode type Spark plugs (13,14)
The combustion system is of the reverse-flow type with 14 combustion chambers arranged around the periphery of the compressor discharge casing. Hot gasses generated from burning fuel in the combustion chambers are used to drive the turbine.
The Liner is the heart of the combustion chamber where fuel and air are mixed and combustion is initiated through 2 spark-mounted 13th and 14th combustion chambers. This air enters the combustion zone through metering holes for proper fuel combustion and through slots to cool the combustion liner.
Fuel is supplied to each combustion chamber through a nozzle designed to disperse and mix the fuel with the proper amount of combustion air. The fire is propagated to others Combustion chambers through Crossfire tubes are inter-connected to each tube.
3. Turbine
The three-stage turbine section is the area in which energy in the form of high energy, pressurized gas produced by the compressor and combustion section is converted into mechanical energy. The turbine rotor assembly consists of two-wheel shafts: the first, second, and third-stage turbine wheels with buckets; and two turbine spacers.
It consists of airfoil-shaped buckets: 1st stage, 2nd stage & 3rd stage buckets. The turbine shell controls the axial and radial positions of the shrouds and nozzles. It determines turbine clearances and the relative positions of the nozzles to the turbine buckets. This positioning is critical to gas turbine performance.
