The heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) provides the thermodynamic link between the gas turbines and steam turbines in a combined-cycle power plant. Its basic function is to recover the heat from gas turbine exhaust. This recovered heat will be utilized to heat water to convert the water into steam. This steam will be utilized in steam turbines to create work. Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) consists of three modules and all three modules are filled with finned tubes. The water passes through these tubes and hot exhaust will pass outside of the modules. heat exchange will occur and LP and HP steam are formed.
The difference between HRSG and Boiler is that HRSG is of the unfired and its has to recover heat from the exhaust whereas Boiler firing is done in burners of boiler.
HRSG consists of following modules:
Module #01
- HP Superheater 2
- HP Superheater 1
- HP Evaporator
Module #02
- LP Superheater
- LP Evaporator
- HP Economizer 2
Module #03
- HP Economizer 1
- Feed water Evaporator
- Pre- Heater (CPH)
The exhaust gas from Gas Turbine exhaust flows into HRSG through duct via diverter damper.The exhaust gas duct system comprises the duct to the HRSG, the diverter damper and are movable blank plate closed to the HRSG inlet.
Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) consists of the following sub-systems:
- HRSG HP System
- HRSG LP System
- Feedwater Storage System
- Condensate Preheating System
The objectives of these system are:
- The HP System heats feedwater and generates superheated steam for admission to the HP section of the steam turbine.
- The LP System heats feedwater and generates superheated steam for admission to the LP section of the steam turbine.
- The HP attemperator limits the temperature of the steam supplied to the HP section of the steam turbine.
- The Condensate Preheating System heat the condensate up to boiling temperature at integral deaerator and remove dissolved gasses such as oxygen and provides feedwater reservoir for HP, LP feedwater pumps.
The HRSG consists of following major components
Economizer:
HRSG Economize is the energy-improving component that helps us to improve the process efficiency by saving fuel. It acts like a heat exchanger as its function is to transfer heat to water and tend to make the process energy efficient.
Thus the main function of HRSG economizer is to recover heat from gas turbine exhaust and transfer this heat to boiler feed water.It increases the temperature of feed water below the boiling point. These consist of a simple set of tubes which are like fin type heat exchangers.
Evaporator:
HRSG evaporator converts the water that was heated in the economizer into saturated steam. Thus they are used to increase the temperature of circulating water at a point where saturated steam starts forming.
Superheaters:
HRSG Super heatrs are used to increase the temperature where the saturated steam is converted into superheated steam.
Condensate/ Steam Flow:
Water is filled in the condenser tank by condensate transfer pumps from where water is transferred to the feed water storage tank by CEP pumps. Boiler feed water pump takes suction from feed water tank to LP & HP drums. After HP and LP drums steam transferred to finned tube and then to steam lines which is used for driving steam turbines then steam condenses at condenser, this cycle repeats again and again
Diverter Damper System
Divert the exhaust flow of the gas turbine either to the HRSG or to the Bypass stack.
Main Equipment`s
The main equipment used with the Diverter Damper system are;
Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU)
Hydraulic Pump (2 x 100%)
- At max pressure (200 bars) pump OFF
- At min pressure (170 bars) pump ON
Charging Pump (1 x 100%)
- At max pressure (200 bars) pump OFF
- At low pressure (180 bars) pump ON
Guillotine Plate
The purpose of the guillotine is to enable a safe isolation of the hot flue gas path between GT and HRSG.
